How much are hotel loyalty points worth?

The standard metric for hotel points value is cents per point (CPP): how many cents of hotel value you extract per point redeemed. Calculate it by dividing the cash room rate by the points required and multiplying by 100. A $300 room redeemed for 30,000 points = 1.0 CPP. Higher is always better.

Each program has a typical CPP range based on historical redemptions. World of Hyatt consistently delivers the best value at 1.5–2.2 CPP — partly because Hyatt has resisted the aggressive category inflation that has hurt competitors. Marriott Bonvoy points have been devalued several times and now land around 0.6–0.9 CPP. Hilton Honors points are issued generously (10 points per $1 spent) but are individually worth only 0.4–0.6 CPP, making them best used for aspirational properties where the cash rate is very high. IHG One sits in a similar range.

Points are not created equal across booking scenarios. Award chart redemptions at top-tier properties often produce 2–3× better CPP than using a "Points + Cash" option or a points advance at a mid-tier property. Always compare the CPP you'd receive against the program benchmark before committing.

Frequently asked questions

How much are Marriott Bonvoy points worth?

Marriott Bonvoy points are typically worth 0.6–0.9 cents each. A 50,000-point balance is worth roughly $300–$450 depending on the redemption. Category 1–3 properties deliver the best value; category 8 redemptions rarely beat paying cash.

What hotel loyalty points are worth the most?

World of Hyatt points are consistently the most valuable at 1.5–2.2 cents per point. Hyatt has a smaller portfolio than Marriott or Hilton but has maintained point values better than competitors.

Should I redeem hotel points or pay cash?

Redeem when the CPP you would receive exceeds the program's typical high benchmark. For Hyatt, that means above 1.5–2.2 CPP. For Marriott, above 0.9 CPP. Below those thresholds, pay cash and save points for a higher-value stay.

How many Hilton Honors points do I need for a free night?

Hilton award pricing varies by property and demand date. At current values (0.4–0.6 CPP), a $200/night room typically costs 33,000–50,000 points. Use this calculator: enter the cash rate, select Hilton Honors, and the required points are shown instantly.

Do hotel points expire?

Most programs expire points after 12–24 months of inactivity. Keep your balance active by making one qualifying transaction (a stay, credit card purchase, or small points buy) before the expiration date. Check your program's specific rules as policies vary.
